Prisoners’ Rights and the Electoral Process
December 16, 2009 | No CommentsThe Council of Europe has stated that the next UK general election could give rise to human rights challenges, as convicted prisoners have not yet been given the right to vote. In 2005, a judgment stated that it is illegal to deny prisoners the right to vote, but this has yet to be acted upon by the Government. There are subsequent concerns that the 2010 general election will fail to comply with the European Convention on Human Rights. The warning from the Council of Europe has been labelled “unprecedented” by the Prison Reform Trust.
