Children’s Rights Bill introduced in the House of Lords
November 23, 2009 | No CommentsThe Children’s Rights Bill, which is a Private Members Bill, was given its first reading in the House of Lords on 19 November 2009. The Bill proposes the incorporation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography, and the Optional Protocol on the involvement of children in armed conflict into domestic law.
The Bill takes a similar format to the Human Rights Act 1998, for example: stating that so far as is possible to do so, domestic legislation must be read and given effect to in a manner which is compatible with the Convention rights; allowing for certain courts to declare legislation incompatible with the Convention rights; and requiring public authorities to act in accordance with the Convention rights.
